Checkmate by rumblealex Checkmate by rumblealex
"So this is how it really ends. The sun will set and never be raised again. Since the night is mine to rule I feel you won't need this anymore." Nightmare Moon said as she levitated her sister's crown away.
"Enjoy your stay in the night time eternal, Celestia." She added before leaving her cornered sister alone in the slowly darkening plain.

---------------
Because I suck at writing nice descriptions.

Ohai! A drawing without Twilight in it!? What's happening to me!

I know the sky doesn't make that much sense but meh.. I wanted both of them to have their celestial bodies above, so I did it.

That's pretty much it! I hope you enjoyed, because I sure had a nice time drawing it!
---------------
8-12 hours - on SAI

-Rumby

Edit: Someone pointed out that this wasn't a 'real checkmate' but more like a 'stalemate'. While I have no doubts this is probably true, I'm not an expert in this game, I placed the pieces based on what I remembered of the rules from many, many, many years ago.

You know, this reminds me a bit of the Age of Empires II cinematic. Love how expressive the faces are in this.

Of course, knowing full well she'll lose against her more skillful sister, in reality Princess Celestia only played to buying time for her champions to retrieve the Elements of Harmony without Nightmare Moon or her forces interfering, and subsequently blasted NM less than 30 seconds after.

Though she lost the game (and technically the war), in the end, it was Princess Celestia who checkmated Nightmare Moon.

Let's be honest, having eternal night would be awful based on several reasons.
Lack of vitamin D from the sun.
booming cases fo depression.
Land would freeze blah blah blah.
cant see where youare when stumbling around in the dark worth a shit.
but even with the shows cannon, Luna would be an awful ruler, i had to brainstorm when writing my own fic and I understood that even in the pony world, she would be the worst cannidate for sole rulership based only on the fact that she thinks that being a princess is a game.
In the first episode, she goes and turns into nightmare moon on the basis that the ponies did not enjoy her night enough, a real ruler would not care and mandate the best actions be done for their people and then ignore the inevitable bitching that people would do unless it was so much that wild protests occoured.
and just to satisfy everyone, the night is for sleeping, dont deny you like it.
(I worked a third shift job in the summer and had to quit because i could not sleep durring the day after working all night.)

never said you shouldent, i was just saying that luna is a terrible ruler.
I actually was a luna fan until i sat down an thought about how awful she would be to serve under.
Then again i am one of the "Deal with it" types of people.

I must say im impressed good sir/lady (not specified on your page so dont know), your statements is an epitome of logic and the reasoning's are great.

Most just favor Luna because she looks adorable(what nobody disputed) but they just ignore everything else. So "by default" as the best liked that makes her the best person to rule also.

I like both, but developed a preference for Celestia when i saw all the unjust and illogical accusations against her.

TL;DR

Thank you for sharing such insightful logic. :D

Personally, I am the "unity" type. but if i had to choose, i would be the Solar Empire.
I must agree, i think woona and Luna can be cute and stuff, especially with the season 1 hairstyle. I like to think, and I wrote a fiction about it, that Luna has the blue hair and use conditioner and shit to make it all stary, being that she is't "full grown". but i straight up HATE Nightmare Moon and the fanfiction around Luna now. It ruined her.
1. this is personal, and i know its fans are going to burn down my house, but I HATE, and I mean it, HATE Nyx from Past Sins, a little overpowerded weakling who can't stop whining throughout the entire story.
Next, and this is the most recent one, i cant stand reading anything involing Lunar Guards. they had 10 seconds of screen time, and now they are regarded as the ultimate badasses who have the personality (and as much originality)as the characters from Call of Duty.

Anyway, thats all for my daily rant. when I finish my Story that i am writing and explains my view of Equestrain society, ill shoot a link to you if you like. (Don't expect it anytime soon, though)

And following you now so no need to look me up, will have a notice about it when its done.

For the "bat ponies" i still think they are just normal guards with a disguise for NMN. We didnt see any after that.

I agree that they must be wearing enchanted armor, and in my story, i make 4 instnaces of Lunar guards, 2 are straight up musclehead without a braincell between the two, while the latter, the charriot pullers, are the protagonists best friends from highschool, they binge drink, they do drugs, are both womanizers.

The sole reason why i do that is because i have seriously had it past my head with...
1. aparently they are the special forces, which is retarded, why would a person's body guards be navy seals? thats just unnessecary.
2. most explanations are that they were enchanted by luna, and the bat wings makes them freaking superpowered. That is just weak storytelling, and two i'd like to have them meet Ozzy Ozborne.
and last but not least, I am SICK and TIRED of reading this sentance!
and I quote... "neither of them noticed the golden pair of eyes floating in the shadows..."

This is how gods fight. Not by raining hell fire or freezing the land, but through games of intellect and cunning. Each piece representing a life, all of them expendable so long as the king lives. This is the game of gods.

And dramatic moment over. Nice work!

Yes, I edited the description to mention it when someone else on a forum pointed that out a few hours earlier today. I just don't feel like moving the pieces around once again so it'll stay like this.

I didn't see the edit.

BTW, you'd have to move the pieces a lot. A rook, king, bishop combo checkmate would look very different, because the king would have to be one of the pieces instigating it. A rook and a bishop cannot checkmate a king by themselves.

I didn't want to have that many pieces on the board so I kept it simple. To achieve a 'proper' checkmate, all the pieces would be stuck in a corner, leaving the majority of the board... naked.
And well, it's not a 'real' chess board anyway, for there's only 6×7 squares instead of 8x8. Who said their game was the same as ours? :D

What I pointed out on a thread is that... I don't draw to be as life-like and 100% representative of how IRL thing works. Otherwise, I wouldn't be drawing magical, talking, immortal ponies with horns and wings that can raise and lower celestial bodies. I just draw to draw.

You can still point out all those little details and all if you feel like, but it won't make any difference.

When I draw something, I want to keep the idea/mood/scene/etc expressed in it as simple as I can. I don't put emphasis on the subtle details that goes around it, I draw what comes in mind. I asked many different peoples from Germany, Belgium, Usa and France and they all -without hesitation- said that Celestia had lost and Nightmare Moon had won over her sister.
That's what I want to get across in the drawing so it's mission accomplished in my books.

Plus, look at the stalemate as a ..métaphore? Celestia's last piece is stuck in a corner and can't move. Wouldn't Celestia herself be in a similar situation facing her sister? The game is kind of representing both themselves in a way.

The title can be wrong in your opinion, but I won't change it because it's not how it's supposed to work IRL, sorry.

Still, thanks for the comments :)

I was just pointing it out. I didn't actually intend for you to change anything. I like it a lot. The only reason I even noticed was the fact that I was curious if the pieces were simply random or not (in an impossible setting).

To be honest, you put more detail in the board than most artists would have.
